This cable car is a lovely way to get up to the village of Pigra and see beautiful views of Lake Como from high up and I’ve posted a couple of times already with running times etc!

...and just look at the views you get as you go up!

Last year it had to stop running to allow for repair work, and there was even talk at one stage that it would never open again.  However I found a newspaper piece a few weeks ago and, with some Twitter translation help from @Germasino (thank you!), I can tell you what’s happening. (Of course if you speak good Italian, you can just read the piece yourself!)

There have been funding problems, but lots people including the town and regional authorities have stepped in to help. Major renovations have been done, and at the moment it us due to reopen in May 2011.  Fingers crossed for that!

Just a quick post about the running times for the previously mentioned cable car (Family Holiday) , and also the ferry that stops in Nesso.
The cable car runs all the year round connecting Argegno and Pigra. In Summer the last run is 1900 (7pm) and in Winter, it’s earlier at 1700 (5pm) It goes every half an hour, except between 1200 & 1400 when it stops for a nice Italian lunch break! (NB at the moment (Jan 2011) it is closed for renovation and they hope it will open again in May 2011. Latest post)

The ferry stop in Nesso is a 10 minute walk from the apartment and you can find a link to the ferry company website (with timetables) here
However it’s important to note that the ferry doesn’t call in Nesso from about the beginning of October (this year the last day was the 4th) until just before Easter. In 2010 it starts again on March 29th.
The good news is that you can still use ferry to get around Lake Como during those months, you’ll just need to get the bus or drive to Torno or Bellagio (for more options) so you can still visit Argegno (for the Pigra cable car), Lenno (for Villa Balbianello, where some filming for Star Wars took place), Menaggio etc. by ferry.

Friends of ours with their 2 children stayed in Nesso in August and sent us some of their pictures.
This is a lovely picture taken from right by where the ferry stops in Nesso.

Nesso by the ferry
On one of the days they took the ferry over to Argengo and then took the cable car up to Pigra….

Cable Car to Pigra View from Pigra Cable Car

The cable car is quite old and quaint, but rather like going up in a ski lift….they shut for a while around midday, so it’s good to check the times up and down….As you can see, you get an amazing view….as long as you are OK with heights!
Cable Car!
When you get up to Pigra, apart from the amazing views, you can walk from there and get a meal in the village.
Another recommended day out was to take the ferry over to Lenno (which is just next to Villa Balbienello, where they filmed some scenes from Star Wars-Attack of the Clones). There’s a beach (lido) there with a bar, and restaurant….
As you can see….a good time was had by all! Lido di Lenno

Another place we’d heard about, but haven’t been to ourselves, is the Jungle Raider Park. It’s a fantastic adventure park, which is really a big obstacle course in the trees.
It’s not far from Nesso (in Civenno Park, Piano Rancio near Magreglio) and the team there are very hot on the safety and also speak English.
Jungle Raider Joe Mick, Joe and Amy had a great time up in the trees…here’s Joe doing his stuff, looking like he’s been raiding jungles all his life! Not sure that this is a typically Italian pastime, but good fun!
